where the country
got its start.

A King room at Society Hill Hotel — dark walnut bed, brass fixtures, morning light

The idea

Small, on purpose. Not minimal — layered.

There are twelve rooms at Society Hill Hotel — and there are supposed to be twelve. Dark walnut, brass fixtures, moody floral wallpaper, black-and-white tile in the bath. The kind of room that looks better at night than it does at noon.

What it is: a walk-up in an 1832 building on one of the best blocks in Philadelphia, a restaurant downstairs you’d walk to on its own, and a neighborhood you’ll want to be on foot in. Not the Four Seasons. Nothing like the Marriotts a few streets over.

Guests, recently

Small hotel. Big fans.

Our stay was amazing. The building was perfect — quaint and aesthetic and comfortable. The room came with a working record player, heated bathroom floors and toilet seats. Everything was perfect with easy check-in, and we used the parking suggestions nearby.

This hotel was very clean and the decorations were so cute! A gentleman helped us on our first day and then remembered us for the rest of our trip. He was so helpful and so nice.

Downstairs

We don’t have a lobby.
We have Piccolina.

Piccolina is a contemporary Italian restaurant that shares our ground floor. It isn’t ours — separate team, separate kitchen, separate reservations — but it’s where most guests arrive, where the building comes to life at night, and where you can be at a table in under a minute.

Dinner daily at 5pm. Reserve directly with them.

Old City, on foot

You’re staying inside the city, not next to it.

Four minutes to Independence Hall. Six to Elfreth’s Alley. Ten to the river. Every major Old City landmark is within six minutes on foot.

Philadelphia · 2026

A big year to be in town.

Philadelphia is at the center of the 250th-anniversary calendar, the FIFA World Cup, and an MLB All-Star Game — all in the same twelve months. Rooms for the biggest dates will go first.

All Year 2026

America 250

Philadelphia is the official host city for the nation's 250th anniversary — year-long programming, parades, and exhibitions throughout the city.

June–July 2026

FIFA World Cup

Philadelphia hosts matches at Lincoln Financial Field, 15 minutes south of the hotel.

July 2026

MLB All-Star Game

Citizens Bank Park hosts the Midsummer Classic, Home Run Derby, and FanFest.

Labor Day

Made in America

The Ben Franklin Parkway turns into a two-day music festival — headliners, food, and a city-center crowd.

And if your dates fall between the headliners, don’t worry — Philadelphia doesn’t slow down. There’s something on every weekend: First Fridays in Old City, Phillies and Sixers home games, a new exhibit at the Museum of the American Revolution, a pop-up on the Parkway. Ask us when you check in.

Know before you book

The things a bigger hotel wouldn’t tell you until check-in.

  • 01Walk-up, four stories, no elevator.
  • 02No lobby, no front desk. Your keycode arrives by text before you do.
  • 03Twelve rooms total. Reserve early on weekends.
  • 04Not pet-friendly.
  • 05Built in 1832 — older than the Civil War, the Phillies, and Philadelphia's City Hall.

Built 1832

The building has had more jobs than most people.

Before it was a hotel, 301 Chestnut was a longshoremen’s house, then:

  • No. 02Civil War recruiting station
  • No. 03Railroad & steamship ticket office
  • No. 04Cigar store
  • No. 05Rubber stamp office
  • No. 06Printing press
  • No. 07Bank
  • No. 08Flophouse
