Museum of the American Revolution
The Museum of the American Revolution opened in 2017 at 3rd and Chestnut, one block from Society Hill Hotel. It is the first and only museum with a comprehensive narrative of the Revolutionary War and its aftermath, and it houses George Washington's actual campaign tent — an irreplaceable artifact that headlines the permanent collection.

What to expect
What a visit actually looks like.
Plan 2–3 hours for the permanent collection. The narrative is chronological, from pre-1763 colonial tensions through the Constitution. Highlights include the Oneida Indian Nation gallery (often overlooked elsewhere), a full-scale privateer ship deck, a surviving Liberty Tree branch, and the dramatic climax: Washington's headquarters tent, shown once an hour in a darkened 10-minute presentation that is genuinely affecting. The museum also runs strong rotating special exhibits — recent ones on women of the Revolution, the Marquis de Lafayette, and espionage.
A short history.
The museum's collection began with William Henry Trexler and the Valley Forge Historical Society in the 1900s; Washington's tent was acquired in 1878 by the Revered W. Herbert Burk. After nearly a century in storage and temporary exhibition, the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and private donors funded the permanent building, which was designed by Robert A.M. Stern and opened April 19, 2017 — the 242nd anniversary of the battles of Lexington and Concord.
